Mervin Rodriguez, a guy we’re used to seeing in the octagon decided to try something a little different. He entered the 170lbs Intermediate Division at the NAGA event on Saturday May 2, 2009 in Edison, NJ. (NAGA stands for North American Grappling Association.) Grappling is different from MMA in that there are no strikes, focusing instead on holds. Honing ones grappling skills would certainly help you out in the MMA ring.
It was ‘must win’ tournament style competition. Meaning you must keep winning every match to advance. He won his semi-final match by earning points on a takedown, and then continued to maintain control of his opponent for the rest of the 5 minute round. In the finals, he started with a 4-0 lead, with a takedown and side control. After that, his opponent ended up tying the match up to 4-4, taking the duo into overtime. While his opponent seemed to be losing steam in the over time, Mervin clearly demonstrated superior cardio, taking down the opposition in the opening seconds of the OT round, resulting in winning the 2009 North East Ground Fighting Championship gold medal!

Atlantic City, NJ – FightCo™ is honored to have been selected to produce custom gloves for WCA’s premier event, Pure Combat, at Atlantic City’s famed “Boardwalk Hall”. When asked about the relationship between WCA and FightCo™, J.J. Brookshire stated, “It has been a real pleasure working with Keith Evans and rest of the crew at WCA. I was impressed with WCA’s focus on quality and performance. When Keith and I first discussed the possibility of putting the WCA logo on FightCo™ gloves the primary concern expressed by WCA was that the gloves had to simply be the best. After testing and confirming that the FightCo™ gloves exceeded their expectations, WCA contracted with us to use our exclusive process to label each glove with the WCA logo and supply these for their premier event.”

The WCA gloves by FightCo™ were universally accepted by all of the competitors. In the opening round of the first fight of the premier WCA event, EVO Fight Team’s Brian Danner scored a crushing knockout over the highly touted fourth degree Brazilian Jiu Jitsu black belt, Daniel Tavares. Danner delivered a vicious body shot followed by a powerful right to the head that floored Tavares. After the fight, Danner commented “These are the best gloves, I’ve ever used. The protection these gloves give is so good that when I connected with that shot to the head, I didn’t even realize it was as solid as it was. Scoring a knockout like that and having my hands completely protected is the ultimate statement of quality when it comes to gloves.” For more information regarding FightCo™ products or to include having your logo placed on FightCo™’s gloves, rash guards, shorts and more visit www.FightCo.com.
